- Mthombo means "river source"
- It is estimated that the refinery will provide up to 27 500 jobs during the construction phase of three to four years and 18 500 permanent jobs owing to direct and indirect effects in the South African economy.
- It is estimated that it will cost around $11bn to build the refinery
- The refinery will produce diesel and petrol to the highest Euro V clean fuels standards
- Not only will the refinery be able to satisfy the needs of the South African market for petroleum products for the next two decades, but it will be also able to export excess products to the rest of southern Africa and beyond
- The refinery should save the country about R18bn on its balance of payments annually
