  • The Board of PetroSA approved the business case for Project Mthombo in 2007.
  • In 2008 HSBC was appointed as the financial advisor, KBC was appointed as the technology advisor, and KBR was appointed as an Engineering company to conduct the full feasibility and Front-end Engineering and Design (FEED)
  • In October 2008 PetroSA was granted a manufacturing license by the Department of Minerals and Energy which allows PetroSA to manufacture refined petroleum products at the Coega site.
  • Pre-Feasibility and Full-Feasibility Studies were completed in 2009
  • In October 2009 a cooperation agreement between PetroSA and Coega Development Corporation (CDC) was signed
  • The project is expected to proceed to the FEED Phase (Front End Engineering & Design) once approval has been obtained
  • All aspects of Project Mthombo will be subject to a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that will commence during the FEED Phase. This phase is expected to commence during 2010 subject to approval.
  • Final approval for investment, after FEED and a successful EIA, will be sought early 2012. Thereafter, construction will commence and is planned to be completed by the end of 2015. The refinery will be commissioned during 2016.
